General Douglas MacArthur wades ashore during initial landings at Leyte, P.I., October 1944. 111-SC-407101
General Douglas MacArthur

We definately appreciate the US Archives giving access to their public domain photographs from World War 2, yet the navigation and optimization of their archive isnt exactly user friendly. Some enlarged photos are so big they don't display well. They are all linked from a long text list and it's hard to find what you might be looking for.

So what did we do about it?

We've taken the entire WW2 photo archive and resized/optimized the enlargements, added multiple galleries of thumbnails, and put it all together with a innovative image viewer, Lightbox.

MOUSE
Get Info by Pointing your Mouse: Once your at the gallery, mouseover thumbnails for additional info, such as original captions, photographers, artists, locations, and dates (when known). This information is followed by identification numbers. Point your mouse at MacArthur on the right for an example.

SAMPLE TOUR
Slideshows and Enlargements: Lightbox eliminates the need for viewing images in popups, or constantly using the back button to navigate. Easy to use and nothing special for you to install.

Get the full tour of its features [click here] or Jump right in and learn yourself by clicking the slides icon to the left [or here]

KEYBOARD
Easy to Navigate: To navigate slideshows you can either use the keyboard, N for Next photo, P for Previous photo, and X will close the viewer, or, you can also navigate by clicking on the enlarged image [click for demo]

The Second World War was documented on a huge scale by thousands of photographers and artists who created millions of pictures. American military photographers representing all of the armed services covered the battlefronts around the world. Every activity of the war was depicted--training, combat, support services, and much more. On the home front, the many federal war agencies produced and collected pictures, posters, and cartoons on such subjects as war production, rationing, and civilian relocation.

The pictures featured in our gallery are from the holdings of the Still Picture Branch (NNSP) of the National Archives and Records Administration. Most are from the records of the Army Signal Corps in Record Group (RG) 111, the Department of the Navy in RG 80, the Coast Guard in RG 26, the Marine Corps in RG 127, and the Office of War Information in RG 208. Others were selected from the records of 12 additional agencies. Most World War II Air Force photographs are not in the National Archives. You can purchase black/white prints and slides of these photographs from the national archives, we provided some information below:
