WW2 Propaganda - Propaganda Posters
"In war, truth is the first casualty" Aeschylus
Propaganda is a specific type of message presentation aimed at serving an agenda. Even if the message conveys true information, it may be partisan and fail to paint a complete and balanced picture. The primary use of the term is in political contexts, and generally refers to efforts sponsored by governments and political parties.
"The propagandist's purpose is to make one set of people forget that certain other sets of people are human." Aldous Huxley (1937)
There is definately a wealth of resources and websites that feature propaganda posters from World War 2, althought there are few that feature decent quality images of all of the super-powers involved in the conflict. The powers of persuasion exhibit at the archives.gov is well put together, but features only 10 images. One of our favorite sites www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/theartofwar/ is visually stunning and well researched, but only focuses on British propaganda. So what did we do about it?
We've taken as many public domain photos of WW2 Propaganda posters as we can find, and resized/optimized the enlargements, added multiple galleries of thumbnails, and put it all together with a innovative image viewer, Lightbox.
"No amount of genius spent on the creation of propaganda will lead to success if a fundamental principle is not forever kept in mind. Propaganda must confine itself to very few points, and repeat them endlessly. Here, as with so many things in this world, persistence is the first and foremost condition of success."Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf (1925)
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."Joseph Goebbels
