What, When, and Where to Upgrade
Upgrades can make the difference in many aspects of Axis and Allies, but players must first understand the benefits of the various upgrades, and learn which ones to get first, and which ones to skip.

The upgrades which any given player will research, depends mostly three basic factors:
  1. General/Country: Which general/nation a player chooses (or is assigned) will largely control which regiments will be produced, and therefore have a large influence on which upgrades will be researched (the first research for Britian, Japan, and Russia will usually be Military Surplus)
  2. Game Situation: No sense in upgrading your infantry if they are outnumbered 3 to 1... Match your opponent in numbers, before spending money on upgrades (except for production upgrades). Many other factors can effect when you get your upgrades (such as being on point, the type of enemy troops you are facing, etc.. )
  3. Regiments Deployed: A simple concept here, don't research upgrades that have no effect the regiments you have in the field, or are planning to produce
WARNING WARNING! Very important that the first thing you do in online play is to deploy a few recon ASAP, to capture as many nearby cities as you can, especially that city in front of your base! Don't worry about upgrades until you have captured and secured those cities!

About Our Guide ~ Upgrades
The approach we took with our Guide to Axis & Allies upgrades, was to create several guides, one for each of the most common types of regiments deployed (see #3 above)

Keep in mind these are generalized guides that will need to be adjusted depending on General/Country, Game Situation, Terrain, and personal preference (as well as many other factors). However, the should help to educate newer players to many aspects of Axis & Allies upgrades.

Get a basic idea of which upgrades effect which infantry units, and how to apply those upgrades in online play. Included is a suggested upgrade order to help newer players understand which upgrades are the most benefitial to their cause.

Many games can be won at the "Mech Stage" of the game, so learn how to get the maximum from your Anti Tank Mech with the all of the appropriate upgrades.

Deploying Artillery Mech is a gamble in the first place, spending money to upgrade them increases the stakes even more. We look at which countries have which upgrades, and then run thru a suggested upgrade order..

When it comes to upgrading your Tanks/Armor, your goal will be to work toward researching every possible upgrade; as they will likely be a significant part of your fighting force for the remainder of the game.

When it comes to upgrading your Artillery Tanks, your goal will be to work toward researching every possible upgrade; as they will likely be your main fighting force for the remainder of the game.

Simply put, it is recommended to do every available upgrade before you call in your first airstrike. Information regarding airpower upgrades can be found in our Airpower section

Ok, maybe they are not completely worthless upgrades, but as far as teaching a newer player to play the game, these are upgrades that can be skipped (or researched late in the game).
