Upgrades > Infantry & Airborne Upgrades
Guide to Upgrading Your Infantry | Airborne
What follows is a crash-course in which countries have which upgrades, and how they effect online play. Also included is a generalized upgrade order, which should give new players an idea on what they effect, and when to research them.
By no means do you have to get every upgrade possible, but at least try to keep pace, or stay ahead of the upgrades of your opponents. Make sure to pay attention to terrain, and scout the enemy, to help decide which upgrades best suit your current in-game situation (and the troops you have in the field).

Guide to Upgrading Your Infantry | Airborne
It is important for newer players to understand which upgrades to get, and when to get them, to be successful in online play. Keep in mind if you ask 10 different people, you would probably get 10 different answers to this question, so what follows is a general guide which in no way is cast in stone.
Some upgrades effect all infantry units, but several of them only effect certain units. Before you order any performance enhancing upgrades you must first make sure these upgrades will actually effect the infantry you have in the field. For example, the
Improved Machine Guns upgrade will not effect
British SaS as they have no
MG Infantry Units in them. Also, very important that the first thing you do in online play is to deploy a few recon ASAP, to capture as many nearby cities as you can, especially that city in front of your base! Don't worry about upgrades until you have captured and secured those cities!
If the upgrade listed is not available to your country of choice, or does not fit your situation, simply skip to the next upgrade in the list.
[1] Military Surplus
When playing as Britian, Japan, or Russia, Military Surplus will generally be your first upgrade in ANY online game, regardless of whay type of build you plan on. Important to get your economy going in the early game!
[1a] Special Infantry
If you are planning on deploying some specialized infantry, such as British SaS , Russian Snipers , or Japanese Commandos , you will need to research them first. As a general rule of thumb, special infantry upgrades are rarely done until you have at least 3 (or more) HQ's. Don't research these technologies until right before you need them.
[2] Conscription
Available exclusively to Russia, research this technology only if you plan on making alot of infantry. Particularly useful when used in combination the Rapid Deployment special op available to General Rokossovski
DEPLOY YOUR INFANTRY
No sense in upgrading your infantry until you have produced them... Performance upgrades can be researched as needed, trying to keep pace, or stay ahead of the upgrades of your opponents. When you research any upgrades will largely depend on the conditions on the battlefield. As a general rule, If you are outnumbered, concentrate on getting more units out and upgrade a little slower... If your forces are equal, or greater in numbers to those of your opponents, upgrade away! [you can left click on an enemy to see which upgrades they possess ] [DEMO ]
[3] Special Forces
The most powerful infantry upgrade is also the only upgrade that gives a defense value bonus (+1). Also adds a +1 attack value, +10% health, and it effects ALL infantry units... The best performance upgrade available for infantry.
[4] Improved Mortars
The Improved Mortars upgrade only effects the mortar infantry unit which is most commonly seen in the mortar infantry regiment and heavy airborne regiment . The +5 attack value and +20% attack speed gives Britian, Japan, and Germany the best mortars in the game.
[5] Improved Machine Guns
One of the most versatile upgrades, affecting MG Infantry, Bunkers, Halftracks, Fighter Planes, and HQ's. The Improved Machine Guns upgrade will offer benefits for the remainder of the game. It's no coincidence that the countries that have this upgrade also have the best regular infantry regiment and halftrack regiments . This upgrade will offer any infantry regiment that features the Machine Gun Infantry Unit that "extra" punch.
[6] Marksmanship
The countries that don't have the Special Forces upgrade (Germany and Russia) have Marksmanship instead. While not as powerful overall as Special Forces, it does offer a better attack value bonus (+2), but is missing any sort of health and defense bonuses.
[7] Garand
Available only to the United States, the Garand upgrade will offer a 20% attack speed bonus to any infantry unit that uses rifles. Most commonly used to upgrade recon infantry for "recon rushes" or for late-game heavy airborne drops
[8] Foraging
All regiments will benefit from Foraging , allowing for quicker healing time while in zone of supply . Always get Foraging before Plentiful Ammunition as it costs less and gives a larger bonus. Only available to Japan and Great Britian, this upgrade is often used to upgrade British SaS or Japanese Commandos /Mortars during the infantry stage of the game. Just make sure you research it at some point...
[9] Plentiful Ammunition
Same deal as Foraging but costs a little more ($100 instead of $75) and offers a smaller bonus (only a +10% bonus instead of +15%)
[10] Advanced Infantry Training
The countries that don't have Foraging and Plentiful Ammunition have Advanced Infantry Training instead, which offers a +1 morale bonus. Good upgrade when fighting vs mortars .
[11] OPTIONAL - NON ESSENTIAL UPGRADES
While these upgrades effect infantry, it's doubtful you will need them in the infantry stage of the game... However, if you think are going to have a chance to win at the infantry stage, the remaining upgrades that effect infantry are:
[11a] Improved Logistics
Available to every country except Russia, this upgrade effects just about every structure and unit in the game. Gives a Bonus of +5 Detection Range for units, and +5 Supply Range for structures that provide a zone of supply . Though the effect may seem small, it does make a difference when laying out supply lines, detecting enemy troop movements, and also helps any regiment that has the bombard ability. Alot of players consider this the last upgrade they get for their arties (late in game), but at only $50 you have a little freedom when you would like to research it.
[11b] Entrenchment
Usually a late game upgrade since it is researched from the engineer brigade , but may have some applications in the early-to-mid game, depending on style of play.
[11c] Improved AT Weapons (LATW)
The use of any sort of Anti Tank Infantry in online play is very rare (and not recommended).
[11d] Panzerfausts
The use of any sort of Anti Tank Infantry in online play is very rare (and not recommended).
In Conclusion
There is no magic upgrade order that will work in every situation, so be able to adapt your strategies and tactics to keep your gameplay fluid.
