FABIAN STRATEGY | Military Tactics
Fabian Strategy: Using a cautious strategy of delay, and avoidance of large scale direct engagements. [32 ]
Fabian Strategy
The Fabian strategy is a military strategy where major battles are avoided in favor of wearing down an opponent through a war of attrition. While avoiding decisive battles, the side employing this strategy harasses its enemy to cause attrition and loss of morale. Employment of this strategy implies that the weaker side believes time is on its side, but it may also be adopted when no feasible alternative strategy can be devised.[33 ]
Uses in History FABIAN STRATEGY IS NAMED AFTER FABIUS MAXIMUS, AND EARNED HIM THE NICKNAME CUNCTATOR ("DELAYER")
• 202BC - Second Punic War Due to Hannibal's skill as a general, he repeatedly inflicted devastating losses on the Romans despite the numerical inferiority of his army — quickly achieving two crushing victories over the Romans at the Battle of Trebbia and the Battle of Lake Trasimene. After these disasters the Romans appointed Fabius Maximus as dictator. Well-aware of the military superiority of the Carthaginians and the ingenuity of Hannibal, Fabius initiated a war of attrition which was designed to exploit Hannibal's strategic vulnerabilities. [32¼ ]
Counter Tactics THE FABIAN STRATEGY IS A STRATEGY OF DELAY, TO COUNTER THIS TACTIC IT'S IMPORTANT TO ATTACK EARLY AND OFTEN
• Infiltration
Use a small force or special operations to infiltrate enemy territory, to destroy or interrupt their supply lines; or attack vital base structures.
• Blitzkrieg
Concentrate a large, mobile attack force at one point in the enemy lines, to accomplish a breakthru and continue a "lightning attack" forward. Often a syncronized, coordinated attack, utilizing land and air forces simultaneously.
• Breakthru
The fabian strategy depends on holding a defensive position, breaking that position can cause havoc for your enemies.
In Axis and Allies RTS EMPLOYING A STRATEGY OF DELAY OFFERS A CHANCE TO IMPROVE YOUR ECONOMIC AND MILITARY STRENGTH
• Entrenchment
Hardened "entrenched" defenses can hold off an attack force much larger than it's own, or may make the enemy reconsider advancing at this time and place altogether.
• Eco Whore
A favorite strategy of the "eco whore ", producing just enough troops to hold, and spending the majority of their available funds to further their economy.
«Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.»
