Promoted to Vice Admiral in 1940, Mikawa's squadron duty continued until July 1942 when he assumed command of the Eighth Fleet in the central and southern Pacific. On 9 August 1942, he led a surface task force in the Battle of Savo Island, achieving a very one-sided tactical victory. Mikawa's Eighth Fleet service continued into 1943, encompassing the long and costly campaigns to retake Guadalcanal and defend eastern New Guinea. He had Naval General Staff and other shore posts in Japan during April-September 1943. From late 1943 until late 1944, Vice Admiral Mikawa was in charge of the Second South Sea Fleet and the Southwestern Area Fleet in the Philippines. Reassigned to Japan following the October 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf, he left active duty in May 1945.source history.navy.mil
"Strike first, and strike hard." Gunichi Mikawa - Axis and Allies RTS
Banzai Charge AXIS and ALLIES RTS
Banzai Charge - "Makes your units go temporarily berserk, giving them a boost to morale and attack value."
Although we don't see any direct evidence this special op effects morale directly, it does provide target units with an immunity to fear, and temporarily increases their health and recharge time (attack speed) by 50%. Since this special op works on infantry and vehicles, it can prove useful in many game situations.
However, to truly take advantage of Mikawa, spend ALL of your early game EXP on Lend Lease (see below)
Lend Lease AXIS and ALLIES RTS
Lend Lease - "Provides a small amount of money."
It has been proven that even a "small amount of money" early in the game can make a huge difference as to your economy. Just watch an experienced player, first thing they do at the beginning of a battle, is sell off their "default" bunkers and AA for the extra
Try and use Lend Lease as often as it comes ready in the early game to help get HQ's out faster, and ultimately improve your economy. You should not need it in the late-game, as the experience is much better spent on either Banzai Charge or Rapid Deployment.
Rapid Deployment AXIS and ALLIES RTS
Rapid Deployment - "Requisitions equipment to temporarily reduce all deployment costs"
This special op will slowly "decay" for five minutes, unless destroyed first. However, it will reduce the cost of all regiments no matter where you place it on the map, so put it in a safe place!
Useful in a variety of circumstances since it reduces the deployment costs of ALL regiments. Use it early for infantry, or late for arties... Best if you stockpile some money first, so you can buy muliple regiments at the reduced price. Just don't forget to save enough EXP for Lend Lease early on...
Corp Reorganization AXIS and ALLIES RTS
Corp Reorganization - Everyone has to deploy a new corp hq from time to time. Don't be hasty about placing that second corp (this special op can only be used once per hour). Make sure you have resolved the situation that caused you to lose your first one! You can always ask your allies if the have a safe place, their base defenses may be better than yours.
If there is no safe place wait until there is one! Move your technology buildings in the meantime, as they may be subject to attack following the fall of your corp hq (losing those buildings too will limit the regiments you can produce).
Keep in mind your second Corp HQ will become a "high priority" target for your enemies. If they can destroy your second corp, and your technology buildings, you will be stuck making only light tanks or halftracks (depending on the tents you have left), which really can't compete in the later stages of the game (or any stage of the game for that matter).
Gunichi Mikawa - One of the most well rounded, no-bomb generals. Lend Lease, and special op's that work in a variety of different situations make Mikawa a favorite of veterans of Axis and Allies RTS. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the inherent strengths of Japan [LINK ]
