Compelling and lesser known WW2 photograph that is also very telling of the grim realities of tank combat.

| In one of the great, overlooked photos of WWII, two Spearhead tank crewmen have left their Sherman (at left) moments after another Sherman (at right) took a hit from a German Panther tank (out of sight). The original newswire caption reads that one crewman is running to aid any survivors in the smoking Sherman, while the other is running toward the camera for a medic. The towering Cologne Cathedral can be seen in the background. |

| Unnoticed in the smoke from the original Panther hit is a third man, the tank commander, falling over the back end of the right-hand Sherman. Both of his feet were severed in the incident and he later died from his wounds. This photo is part of a much larger collection of photos and movie film of some of the first recorded action of the Amercian M26 Pershing heavy tank. After the Panther attacked the two Shermans, the Pershing, with its improved armor and 90mm gun, was sent in and subsequently destroyed the Panther. |
