the supply drop simply creats a region of supply around the boxes that appear. once your regiments move within range of the supply-drop they will automatically start resupplying themselves.: (you should see the green life-bars reaching maximum capacity over time).
this only works if the regiments within the supply-drop radius are attached to an HQ. if you execute a drop and none of the nearby regiments are attached it won't do any good at all.
supply drop seems to work better on cities that are under siege. even if the area of supply has been cut off. hidden inside of buildings it's harder for enemy ground units to destroy. if I see a lot of enemies approaching a city I might use a supply drop to help keep my units at full strength even under fire.
one of my favorite deployments of this op (in Single Player) is to use a supply drop in a forest near an enemy Corps HQ. I would then move in a two 6-regiment clusters of infantry (with a mix of Goliath, AT, Mortar infantry) to launch hit-and-run attacks against the enemy's camp. it allows the Goliath infantry to recharge. I keep one 6 regiment unit near the supply drop marker to keep it safe, while the other group attacks. this way I can have a constant stream of two-pronged Goliath attacks with AT infantry to finish things off. if you play it right, you can use the supply drop to cut an enemy camp down by several "tents" or HQs
be warned, however, that the aircraft delivering the supplies are vulnerable to enemy AA fire. you should scout the drop-zone to make sure that it will actually get there! usually the aircraft is spawned on the opposite side of where you want the drop-- it will then fly in a straight line towards the drop-zone marker. don't use this special op unless you know that the drop can be made safely.
(case in point, on the Iwo Jima campaign mission in SP it's worthless to use any air-drop based operations until you've cleared the southern shore of both enemy bases. the AA batteries will destroy nearly all of your airplanes before you can get the provisions!) |

One of the most helpful ops other than the infantry resupply Contributes health to regiments either rushing or defending a city. |
