Hello. I am interested in creating a new nation. Axis & Allies was the first non-flash PC game I ever played, and it is the first game that I have ever attempted to modify. I want to create a new nation that, at first, will use pre-existing models and skins but have it's own independence. Specifically, I want a nation that can be accessed from the Editor mode. I managed to create a new nation using GBR files and it showed up in the list of factions for a custom battle, but I can not figure out how to make it into a fully independent nation that can be accessed from the list of countries in the Editor mode. Help with this would be much appreciated, and any help/tips for down-the-road modifications such as dropping the GBR files and making my own (and having them function correctly) would also be appreciated. I did look around the forums a good bit but didn't find what I was looking for.

making a brand new nation show up in the editor is actually REALLY time consuming process.

you need new buildings in their own national folder with all of the appropriate .tgi files and graphics
you need new effects (this is for the air and water transports, as well as parachutes and waving flags)
you need to create new specific entries int he Game folder for the placement_grouops.tgi
you need to add the new generals you want to the game
a new entry is required in the Nations folder (which you've figured out)
a new set of Properties needs to be added--and you have to make duplicate entries specificly to these files:
properties_intrinsic.tgi
new Regiments for the nation-- this is important-- because you have to have a regiment for each HQ to deploy the truck and a regiment_unpacked for the building in it's normal division tent form. then you need them to be properly named
some Templates need to be changed as well.

template_building_nation_aa.tgi
template_organization_aa.tgi
template_unit_aa.tgi

(think that's everything).

after all that gets done then you need to adjust the index_aa.lst file in the "Data" folder so that the game knows where to look for the new national files.
the only part that's optional is the new generals folder-- as a general can be selected from any existing nation and placed into another nation. to use an example-- right now theharkonnen and I ended up using Montgomery as a place holder general for all of the nations in progress.

when you open up the index_aa.lst file look carefully at each national list and update it with your new nation in each spot.

after you've done all of that you should be able to get your new nation to show up in the editor. it's not easy, but once you've done it the first time it gets easier.

I would recommend downloading the Forgotten Combatants Mod for a better working example:

Thanks a lot. I did everything you said and I think I went about your instructions competently. However, when I started A&A I had some errors (Which I expected). I fixed all of the errors thus far except for one.

Documents\A&A\data\Nations\ind.tgi(0): Unknown placement group 'group_nation_ind'

Not sure what I need to do to make it register ind (India).

Sorry if this is obvious stuff but I can't seem to figure out how to fix this error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I'd like to note that it was your User Mod that got me into this. I'm looking forward for your new Uncommon Valor mod.

well, there is the placement_group.tgi file that needs to be adjusted-- which is located in the Game folder

I think if you change that it should be okay.

Yea. I was interested in making a CSA (Confederate States of America) for A&A, but not being able to change the campaign map's territories really put a damper on that idea. I don't know though. I might look into the idea again.

It would be nice to create new nations such as Italy, France and other minor factions.

For the Second World War.

All taken care of. We had France and Italy done for about six months now. We are finishing up Poland, Finland, China, and sme others, like Greece, Hungary, Romania, etc (See the description over at moddb).

well, it certainly wasn't part of my original plan. but we've added India to the list of playable nations.

I've found that making Australia/New Zealand and Canada into separate nations improves gameplay quite a bit in the WW2 map. South Africa and India are still subordinate to Great Britain but have unique defensive armies in the WW2 map.

I've also included a sub-faction for the Indian National Army that cooperated with Japan.

you can find the download for the patch here:
