A master of espionage, Orde Wingate began his career in intelligence by thwarting Arab terrorist forces operating near Palestine. He bluffed 12,000 Italians into surrendering to a force of a few hundred, and concluded his career by executing sabotage attacks across Burma, destroying Japanese bases, bridges, and equipment. I was reading an article about Wingate in a back-issue of Military History Quarterly. the fellow was a bit of a rebel: while stationed in Palestine he became an ardent Zionist-- and helped train many of the future Israeli army's fledgling soldiers. such was his enthusiasm for the Zionist cause that he was transferred away from Palestine because the British government considered him a potential security risk! had he not managed to somehow cultivate a friendship with General Wavell he would have been a footnote in WWII history-- Wavell, unlike many of Wingate's peers, could see past his surly and cantankerous personality and see that he had the makings of a great soldier. a very striking character. he was considered by many to be the very antithesis of what was expected of a good British officer! |
