The reason japan and america wanted the islands is because it had a airfeild. With this stratigic base they would be able to launch planes from tehre and bomb the enemy fleets. well the american carriers came and had a battle iwth 3/4 of the enmy fleet while the last 1/4 went to wake.wake took many heavy bombing runs. they also sent out a fake transmission taht said they water supply was contaminated but it was fake so taht the japs would come.The battle below with the american fleet and japanse fleet ended in japan looseing 4 carriers and the americans lost 1 carrier. Its name was the hms or uss. YorkTown it was leaning after it was hit and the captain finaly said abandon ship. All personel went to diffrent ships and carriers while the hms uss. YorkTown was still afloat, near the end of the war or 1944 july i belive the hms uss. YorkTown was shot by torpedios by a japaenesse sub. after the 2 torpedoes it went straight down. The other to carriers that made it out were the EnterPrise and the Lexington.

That is true but a more better explanation is that the Japanese wanted Midway as a stepping stone for the Japanese Imperial Navy to station troops their and use the airbase as to airstrike United States and Pearl Harbor again. However the main cause I should say is that Yamomoto is not a experienced person as commanding fleets. He is more into strategy for using aircraft carriers as a power. Mikawa is actually a torpedo guy instead of strategist with aircraft carriers. Since the lack of the Japanese Imperial High command, for me I think is one of the reasons why they lost. Even though there are other opinions about this battle, the Japanese Navy still lost.
