The US spent several million dollars during WW2 on a plan to arm large numbers of bats with incendiary bombs and release them over Japanese cities just before dawn.... As the sun rose they would hide in buildings across the city. Shortly thereafter built-in timers would ignite the bombs, causing widespread fires and chaos.
Delivered to the target area in a capsule which opened 1000 feet off the ground and released the bats
The plan worked so well in testing that they were able to destroy simulated targets, as well as much of their testing facilities.... lol
The plans were dropped as the atomic bomb came available, but some have speculated the bat bombs could have caused even more damage than a nuke, with less loss of life...
