Think human wave assaults, blocking units and summary executions by the NKVD for "defeatism" were perhaps not the best method to win the Great Patriotic War? Well in today’s Russia you better keep it to yourself.
The Russian government is to outlaw criticism of Soviet military tactics during the Second World War in the latest example of its heavy-handed approach to dissent.
The controversial plan comes after a television documentary exposed the scale of human losses during one of the conflict’s bloodiest battles.
The program stirred deep emotions in a country that has traditionally glorified the heroic exploits of ordinary soldiers during the "Great Patriotic War" but has often ignored the immense human cost behind the victory over Nazi Germany.

Actually part of it was the German's tactic of tricking the Russians. During when Germany was forbidden to create an army or airforce after World War I, the Germans agreed to build their military forces in the Eastern Europe unless they trained their forces. Especially the tank tactics was a controversy because the Germans did not want to help the Russians who they were going to invade later. |
