since my hands are starting to suffer a bit from so much computer use-- I think I'm going to take the plunge.

I'm going to try and draw some of the generals from scratch on paper. since we don't have a straight-on shot of many of the generals-- if I can free-hand a decent illustration on paper, scan it, I might be able to add color in later and make it look decent. if not-- well, that's okay-- because it's been awhile since I've done some serious drawings. it might be the best solution for my hands-- and for most of the Chinese and Italian generals!

if I have anything that seems appropriate I'll post it here.

Well, I think I can do about 6 more generals for each faction. I already did nine or so for Germany and such. However, if there are specific generals you absolutely must have, say Paulus, then I do need a picture.

I think Italian generals are a need and maybe a couple Chinese. I already did Mao and Chiang cand will do three others you posted a while back. If you get around to it, maybe a couple french as well.

Walter Model is a slight problem. There is a good forward looking picture of him, but its in black and white. Maybe you can color it with a crayon or something.

Did you get my Raeder, Goering, and Alexander generals I sent you via email?

I also did McArthur and Lemay, but I'm going to do a few more before emailing them to you.

Yes, I'm still looking for French generals as well. And maybe one from other countries, like Greece and Finland, since I'll be making generic factions. However, I plan on only doing one general for each faction.

I guess if you were going to limit yourself to just ONE Finnish general it would have to be Mannerheim-- as he's the most historically significant and obvious choice. since he was a promininet political figure as well-- there should be at least a few decent pictures of him. the "Mannerheim Line" was named after him-- and he played a role in stopping the Soviet Army when it invaded Finland. ... it was Carl... something ... Mannerheim.

Charles de Gaulle is an obvious choice for France. then there's Gamelin, Leclerc, Georges... and although I'm not sure there are pictures of him-- I think it would be nice to include a campaign mission where you can play as "Andre-Gaston Pretelat". (after reading through a biography on Manstein it's worth pointing out that this was the ONLY Allied general who accurately predicted German intentions to invade France through the Ardennes. in fact, his calculations of the German advance was only off by 3 hours! that would be a fun idea for a campaign mission-- what if the French high-command had listened to his report and sprung a trap for the advancing German forces in the Ardennes? I admit my knowledge of WW2 French generals is kinda rusty.

there's Henri Winkelman as the commander of the Dutch forces as they faced the German steam-roller

as for more French options:

Jean de Lattre de Tassigny

Admiral Francois Darlan (got assassinated)

and his replacement Henri Giraud

I was hoping to find some French Air Force commanders-- but that appears to have been an issue that was decided by the French Army.

I haven't done much truth be told. I have good balck and white photos of Mussilini and two others, but that's it. Kinda depressing we can't find good pics of Italians.

yeah-- there's a reason I decided to go for the plain old photograph approach for a lot of the more obscure generals! while it's far from ideal-- in some circumstances it's the only thing that allows the general to be included in the game at all. I've got a drawing in progress of one of the Italians-- but it'll be a long time before it's ready to see the light of day! the big problem is that pencil and marker work doesn't look very good when it's scanned. the flesh-tones are all wrong. it then requires considerable re-working to make it look good.

truthfully, probably the best thing would be to get a digital drawing tablet and a solid program and make them directly on a computer. I imagine that most of the original skins were probably made with a Wacom digital drawing tablet on a solid computer system. of course, that requires a considerable investment of time and money! most modders probably don't have that kind of hardware available.

well, that's the thing-- many of the only existing photos of certain generals were in black-and-white and at an angle-- so if you REALLY want them in color you'd have to make them from scratch. no amount of photoshop is going to make a portrait at a 3/4ths angle compatible with the existing general portrait artwork.

Or Lightroom 3 I have not heard of this but I think it might be a different version of photoshopping. But in my opinion, I don't know if it is useful or not.

I managed to find a colored picture of walter model, so I'll be doing him eventually.

I would like to do at least one British sea commander, but I can't find anyone with a colored pic and looking forward. If anyone finds one let me know. I was hoping to do andrew cunningham, but I can't find good pics of him.

Edit: Never mind. I got one of Bertram Ramsey GBR and Vasili Arkipov. Is Vasili the Russian adminral your using Giz?

no, I didn't have Arkipov on the radar-- I went straight for the two most important WW2 Russian admirals and went with them. now that I read up on him-- Arkipov seems to have served on a mine-sweeper in WW2 and didn't become an admiral of significance until the 60s. it would seem odd to have somebody serving on a mine-sweeper featured as a playable 'general'.

Kuznetsov and Isakov were the two Russian admirals I picked-- both of them performed important roles-- one actually led ground forces to stop the Nazi advance and the other commanded the Russian amphibious counter-attacks against Manstein in Crimea. Kuznetsov was effectively the Russian equivalent of Nimitz-- so he seemed like an obvious choice. Isakov fought against Manstein and lost a foot due to a German raid-- but didn't retire, he continued his work on the Russian general staff--

I was running out of space so I didn't include Sergey Gorshkov-- who even has a great catch-phrase "better is the enemy of 'good enough!'" he also took part in the amphibious counter-attacks against Manstein. although by the end of the war he merely commanded a squadron of destroyers in the Black Sea-- but he'd be a more historically accurate and resonable choice than Arkipov.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Gorshkov

this guy I can probably get around to later-- by coloring up the black-and-white photo.

but Kuznetsov, Isakov, and Gorshkov are the only USSR naval commanders that would seem like a good fit for the game. each one of them would eventually attain the highest levels of command in the Soviet navy.

in my current mod

Bertram Ramsey (evac of Dunkirk, D-Day)
Andrew Cunningham (fought against the Italians for most of his career)

although he seems to be have been more a General Staff-type

Sir John Tovey was a high-ranking British admiral in WW2-- he's best known for orchestrating the operation to sink the Bismark (might be a fun campaign mission for that). he would be a good addition to the game (since it's easy to have 20+ general for each country we could toss him in later)

and Harko-- Nikolai Kuznetsov probably has some good post WW2 color pictures of him-- he was the Soviet Navy's C-in-C for a considerable length of time (given what Stalin tended to do to high-ranking officers)

The goal is for the Brits ti have 2 admirals. Adding Ramsey should do that and then one admiral for Russia. So, no we don't need any right now.
