Tadamichi
Kuribayashi was responsible for the defense of Iwo Jima. Having had the importance of the island impressed upon him in a personal audience with the Emperor of Japan,
Kuribayashi instructed his men to kill ten American soldiers apiece. Despite being desperately outnumbered by the end of the invasion, and being asked numerous times to surrender,
Kuribayashi and his men refused. Out of 20,000 Japanese defenders of the island, ninety-five percent were killed, including
Kuribayashi.
