Erich von
Manstein proved himself to be a genius of military command and planning in World War II. He first distinguished himself by planning the successful invasion of France, for which he earned the Knight’s Cross. He later became one of the most able commanders in the failed invasion of Russia, and managed to complete most of his objectives, despite heavy losses. After the retreat from Russia,
Manstein stepped up his criticism of Hitler’s policies and was eventually relieved of command in 1944.
