Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, was chief of Combined Operations Command in 1942, and helped organize the preparations for D-Day. In 1943 he became supreme commander for the troops in southeastern Asia, where he repelled the Japanese invasion into India and re-conquered Burma. He accepted the Japanese surrender in Singapore. After the war, he became the last Viceroy of India before that nation’s independence, and went on to become First Sea Lord and chief of Britain’s defense staff.
