An Airfield continually resupplies itself with a stock of fighters and bombers, which reside within the Airfield itself. Fighters automatically defend the Airfield if it’s attacked, or can be sent on Air Recon missions into enemy territory. Bombers can be sent out on Air Strikes (bombing runs), with a fighter escort if you have fighters available. You are required to pay for each individual Air Recon or Air Strike that you call, so you will need many Division HQs if you plan to make heavy use of air support.
