City Control and Strategy ~ Axis and Allies RTS
Axis and Allies RTS - City Control and Strategy - Page III
Stealing Cities
There are many ways to "steal" a city in Axis and Allies RTS, and one of our favorites has to be using a Paper Tank.
The German Panzer Holhe (or Russian Maskirovka) - commonly refered to as a "Paper Tank" (or "Fake Tank"), produces a single, unattached medium tank regiment. Although it is often the subject of jokes, the Paper Tank does actually have some practical applications in online mulitplayer gameplay. Annoy your enemies by stealing their cities... [

Below we have demonstrated another commonly seen technique, which we will call the "Hit and Run". To steal a city in this manner, you attempt to break the entrenchment of your opponent by causing his regiment to
rout . Entrenchment offers huge defense bonuses, and without some sort of
micro , (2) un-entrenched recon will never defeat (1) entrenched one.
The "Hit and Run" Step I - In the example below, we have highlighted an area in yellow that represents the boundaries of city terrain. The blue infantry has had an opportunity to capture the city, and entrench on the edge of city terrain.
Entrenched regiments will automatically attack enemies that approach too close, but will not break entrenchment to automatically attack nearby regiments, unless the have been told to
gaurd that location. Gray has entrenched a regiment just outside the area that blue will defend automatically.
Now gray takes a second regiment, and attacks blue while leaving his first regiment entrenched... See
Step II
The "Hit and Run" Step II - As soon as the blue engages gray, gray retreats towards his entrenched regiment. Blue will give chase for a short distance, without breaking entrenchment... If executed correctly, blue will run right into the gray entrenched regiment.. See
Step III
The "Hit and Run" Step II
The "Hit and Run" Step III - Once the battle between the entrenched regiments has begun, gray will turn his retreating regiment around and join the combat. Gray now holds an advantage in the battle (even better if he is in his
zone of supply )!
Very Important that gray does not allow his un-entrenched regiment to
rout ! When a regiment routs it gives a morale bonus to the enemy, and if the blue entrenched recon in this example were to receive that bonus, gray will never break his entrenchment.
The "Hit and Run" Step III
So thats the basics of the "Hit and Run" - you are welcome to add your thoughts and ideas in the
Breaking Entrenchment thread
City Under Siege
One modifier that effects cities is
Under Siege . While a city is under siege it no longer provides a zone of supply, so it can be useful to
bombard the city before attacking. From a defensive perspective, it is a good idea to extend your zone of supply up to highly contested cities, since you cannot always rely on the zone of supply that the city provides.
It is pretty easy to tell when a city is
Under Siege - it will be on fire as in the example below.. Further information about the current status of the city can always be obtained by clicking on the city center.
Example of a City Under Siege
Improved Logistics
Not many upgrades effect Cities but
Improved Logistics happens to be one of them. Available to every country except Russia, this upgrade effects just about every structure and unit in the game. Gives a Bonus of +5 Detection Range for units, and +5 Supply Range for structures that provide a
zone of supply
Though the effect may seem small, it does make a difference when laying out supply lines, detecting enemy troop movements, and also helps any regiment that has the bombard ability. Alot of players consider this the last upgrade they get for their arties (late in game), but at only
$50 you have a little freedom when you would like to research it.
City Advantage
Veterans of Axis and Allies online play will certainly recognize the scenario pictured to the right ->
Which is often referred to as
City Advantage . The random maps in online play are not always fair in the layout, or general assignment, and this is an aspect of the game new players must get used to.
Just remember that the layout of the cities on the map does not gaurantee who will capture them. Having alot of cities in front of your base is not always a good thing, if it falls under enemy control they now have a zone of supply right at your doorstep.
In Conclusion
Well hopefully you enjoyed our presentation on Axis and Allies Cities, and maybe even learned something! Any additions, corrections, and input are welcomed in our official
cities thread
"Military tactics are like unto water, for water in its natural course runs away from high places and hastens downwards... Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows, the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing. Therefore, just as water retains no constant shape, so in warfare there are no constant conditions. He who can modify his tactics in relation to his opponent and thereby succeed in winning, may be called a heaven-born captain."
