GAMESPY: GameSpy Shuts Down Gaming Fan Sites
MULTIPLAYER
Gamespy shut down its public hosting of fansites as of August 31st, 2009, which included one that was dear to our hearts, the long-standing A&A strategy reference; The Spotters Guide. But don't fret, The Spotters Guide has a new home at http://axisallies.chimaerica.com/.

The future of StrategyPlanet itself seems somewhat in question, as no news stories have been posted there in three months; although IGN/Gamespy is in the midst of a data center transfer so who knows what the future will bring. For us personally, as long as Gamespy continues to support A&A RTS, we're happy...

MICRO: Noob Tip: How to Hotkey a Group of Regiments
SETTINGS and CONTROLS

Commanding a dozen regiments during the heat of battle can be a daunting task. To make it easier, you can select and group up to six regiments at the same time and give them orders simultaneously. To select and group multiple regiments, click on an open area, hold down the left mouse button and drag a box around all of the regiments you wish to include. You can also manually add or remove regiments by holding down [Shift] or [Ctrl] and clicking on a regiment.

Once you have selected a group, you can save it by holding down [Ctrl] and pressing any of the keyboard number keys. This assigns all of the regiments in that group to that number key, allowing you to reselect that group by pressing that number key. When you assign a group to a number key in this way, that group appears in the unit bar at the top of the screen. Note: You can add groups to the unit bar directly by right-clicking in an empty square, and can select them by clicking on their portraits in the bar. If you like, you can also assign individual regiments and buildings to hotkeys and the unit bar in the same way. (Source: Axis and Allies RTS Official Manual)

INFANTRY: Japanese Mortars or Heavy Airborne?
JAPAN
Japanese Mortars or Heavy Airborne?
Japan has many options when it comes to Infantry, and good upgrades as well, such as Special Forces, Improved Mortars, Foraging, Plentiful Ammunition, and more.. While Commandos certainly have their place in the game, many experienced players can't seem to agree on which in better, Japanese Mortar Infantry or Heavy Airborne. So we thought we would take a moment to profile these two commonly seen regiments, and maybe you can decide for yourself..

First, let's take a look at the regimental level, with the most obvious differences being that the Mortar Infantry regiment has [2] Mortar Infantry Units and [1] MG Unit, while the Heavy Airborne regiment has exactly the opposite. The Mortar Infantry regiment costs a little less at $65, and of course these these two regiments are deployed from different HQ's. There are differences between airborne and infantry units as well, but we will cover those in a moment.

Mortar Infantry Regiment $65

Japan has the strongest Mortar Infantry Units in the game, offering the best blast damage [+35] and morale loss effect [1.00], which makes both the Mortar Infantry and Heavy Airborne regiments quite popular.

Heavy Airborne Regiment $75

Japan enjoys the benefit of being the only country capable of earning +$30 from all their HQ's (after military surplus upgrade), so their economy isn't harmed by deploying Airborne HQ's as it would be with other countries. Japan is also the only country that can purchase the Heavy Airborne regiment for $75, all others cost $100 (ground deployed version)

Read More.. [Story Continued]

Note:

zling wrote: First of all, as the article says, this is a question mainly for Japan. other countries will be better off with different units, well Germany, especially with Kesselring can also put both mortars and heavy airbornes to pretty good use.
Imho the question boils down to the following: are you facing enemy infantry(SAS, Snipers, Commandos, etc) or early mechs. if facing infantry than the additional mortar troop per regiment is more valuable than the overall increased strength per soldier of the heavy airbornes. however when facing mechs the heavy airbornes shine, being the strongest infantry/airborne regiment available, and that the mortar itself doesn't do that much damage against mechs, as opposed to other infantries.

another thing to note is that mortars are a lot easier to spam, being produced from a 5 unit tent(infantry) as opposed to a 3 unit tent(airborne), so in any type of fast build mortars are superior.

SPECIAL OPS: List of All Special Ops
SPECIAL OPS

Special Ops are part of the most specific and focused strategies that exhist within A&A. Experienced players will alter their strategies to take advantage of their special ops. For example, the special ops of Konev are all well suited for the infantry stage of the game, so a player using Konev may be tempted to go for an infantry rush early.

The special ops available to any given general are located on the Special Operations bar, and can be used as long as they are not "grayed out".. It is up to you to know when and how to use them for greatest effect. In most cases that means saving your EXP for your most powerful special ops, and only using your lesser special ops in game changing or emergency situations.

Taking time to learn the strongest special ops of all the generals will help you quickly size up the strengths, and possible strategies, of not only your opponents; but your allies as well. See Counting Bombs for more info.

We have addressed the usage of each Special Op by General, in our Generals of Axis and Allies section. What follows below is a directory of the special ops and which generals have them, click on the General for our take on all the special ops. Also Included:

Ok, maybe they are not completely worthless upgrades, but as far as teaching a newer player to play the game, these are upgrades that can be skipped (or researched late in the game).
