AXIS and ALLIES RTS ~ ANTI TANK HALFTRACK REGIMENT (AT MECH)
The game play of Axis and Allies can be logically divided into roughly 3 battle-type stages:
Infantry ,
Mech (short for mechanized unit), and
Tanks . The anti-tank regiment, aka "AT-Mech", is the dominant force during the "
Mech " stage, as it offers the first chance to get any type of armored unit on the field, the tank destroyer.
It is important to understand the inherent strengths, weaknesses, and available upgrades as it pertains to each country. When and how much to upgrade your units depends largely on the game situation, ideally trying to keep more, better upgraded regiments than your opponent. See our
Guide to Upgrading AT Mech for the full story.
Anti Tank Halftrack Regiment aka "AT-Mech"
All anti-tank halftrack regiments consist of [1] armored command car, [4] halftracks, and [2] tank destroyers, regardless of country.
Halftrack Unit We broke down the halftrack unit in detail on the
halftrack regiment page , the quick story being, USA, Britian, and Germany have good halftracks, Japan and Russia do not.

Now it's time to get to the real strength of the AT-Mech regiment, the tank destroyers... Let's start off by looking at a comparison of the basic stats of the tank destroyer unit, and the differences of the various nations:

AXIS and ALLIES RTS ~ TANK DESTROYER UNIT
Taking a quick look at the tank destroyer unit, you can see Japan once again has the lowest health and defense value, as well as lowest attack value. British tank destroyers are only marginally better, but at least have a higher health due to
Mechanical Reliability . Although when fully upgraded, the Japanese and British units can heal 25% faster due to
Foraging and
Plentiful Ammunition .
The three strongest tank destroyers all have the
Gyrostabilized Tank Guns upgrade, with the German Jagdpanther being arguably the strongest due to it's 100 attack value. Some might say the Russian SU-85, with it's higher health and defense value, is the strongest. The US M18 Hellcat comes in a close and respectable third.
UnOfficial Regiment Ranks
The research and data is all in, and after years of tesing and analysis here's our
UnOfficial Regiment Ranks for the Axis and Allies RTS Halftrack Regiment...
from first to worst
Germany ~ Anti-Tank Regiment
Tank Destroyer Unit Halftrack Unit
The Jagdpanther and it's 88mm Gun inflict a punishing 100 attack value when fully upgraded, making it the best Tank Destroyer in the game hands down. Good available upgrades, only missing
Mechanical Reliability , but Germany also has a couple of unique upgrades,
Advanced Armor Training and
Schurzen which help make up for this. Decent halftracks that possess the important
Improved Machine Guns upgrade. Best AT-Mech Regiment in A&A, the challenge with Germany is surviving the infantry stage of the game, and deploying enough of them with their weak economy. Played correctly, Germany can be a dominate force during the Mech Stage of the game.
United States ~ Anti-Tank Regiment
Tank Destroyer Unit Halftrack Unit
The best halftracks and good tank destroyers makes the USA AT-Mech regiment a force to be dealt with. USA also has all the best upgrades, and the special ops of
Eisenhower and
Patton that make USA AT-Mech even stronger. Add the best economy in the game, and
Mechanized Production , and you will likely see alot of this regiment everytime you face USA.
In Conclusion
Although the game can end quite easily at the "Infantry" stage, all players, regardless of nation played, must have a plan for the "Mech" stage of the game. Here's some basic suggestions for the various countries in the game.
Germany
AT-Mech are a strength for Germany, your challenge is to get enough of them on the field with the weakest economy in the game. Spend your money wisely and eco up as much as possible. Find ways to buy time until you can get a 6-pack of AT Mech out.
Great Britian
British AT-Mech are good versus infantry, but head-to-head are at a disadvantage versus every country, except Japan. If the terrain supports it, combine with SaS to help even the playing field.
Japan
Considering the weakness of the Japanese AT-Mech regiment, you might consider going for a strength of Japan, infantry. Japanese Mortars and Heavy Airborne will do well versus AT-Mech if they stick to good terrain such as cities and forests. Back them with Arty Mech, and make sure not bunch too many units together to avoid being bombed. Versus no bombs, some Japanese AT-Mech spam attacks have been successful, using mechanized production and Mikawa's rapid deployment. Newer players might avoid this regiment altogether.
Russia
With Russia it's a question of matchups. If they can fight head-to-head versus Japan or Great Britian, they will do well. They will have to find ways to buy time versus Germany and the USA. In 4v4 play, you might consider swapping sides with one of your allies, if it presents a better matchup for you.
United States
One of the strengths of the USA, even more so when playing as Patton or Eisenhower, with the use of mechanized advance. Use in combination with recon infantry to help keep the enemy constantly engaged (eventually breaking their morale). With mechanized production, it is somewhat common to see AT-Mech spam attacks with USA... It can be very hard to fend off 18 regiments if you get them on the field quick enough.
